Chromebooks outsold Macs for the first time in the US

Google’s low-cost Chromebooks outsold Apple’s range of Macs for the first time in the US recently. While IDC doesn’t typically break out Windows vs. Chromebook sales, IDC analyst Linn Huang confirmed the milestone to The Verge . “Chrome OS overtook Mac OS in the US in terms of shipments for the first time in 1Q16,” says Huang. “Chromebooks are still largely a US K-12 story.” IDC estimates Apple’s US Mac shipments to be around 1.76 million in the latest quarter, meaning Dell, HP, and Lenovo sold nearly 2 million Chromebooks in Q1 combined. Chromebooks have been extremely popular in US schools, and it’s clear from IDC’s comments the demand is driving US shipments. Outside of the US, it’s still unclear exactly how well Google’s low-cost laptops are doing. Most data from market research firms like IDC and Gartner focuses solely on Google’s wins in the US. Google’s milestone will undoubtedly unnerve Microsoft, at a time when PC shipments are in an overall decline. IDC

Nokia phones are making a comeback with Android on board

Image
Microsoft has announced that it’s selling its feature phone business for $350 million in a group deal to FIH Mobile , a subsidiary of Chinese hardware manufacturer Foxconn, which manufactures iPhones for Apple, and a newly formed company called HMD Global . The deal includes Microsoft’s entry-level mobile device assets and the Nokia brand name, as well as its manufacturing facility in Hanoi, Vietnam. The transaction is expected to be finalized in the second half of this year. When it is complete, HMD will be able to sell Nokia-branded feature phones as well as Android-based smartphones and tablets. The new firm plans to invest more than $500 million over the next three years to market its mobile products worldwide. The idea is to capitalize on Nokia’s brand equity, which it garnered over several years making high-quality feature phones as well as Windows Phone-based smartphones. However, this won’t be the first time the brand’s label will grace an Android-based dev

iOS 9.3.2 is here, fixes iPhone SE Bluetooth problems and other bugs

Image
Apple has just released iOS 9.3.2, a minor update to iOS 9 that fixes a handful of minor bugs. The most significant fix is related to the iPhone SE, which “could experience audio quality issues” when paired to Bluetooth headsets. The full release notes are below: Fixes an issue where some Bluetooth accessories could experience audio quality issues when paired to the iPhone SE Fixes an issue where looking up dictionary definitions could fail Addresses an issue that prevented typing email addresses when using the Japanese Kana keyboard in Mail and Messages Fixes an issue for VoiceOver users using the Alex voice, where the device switches to a different voice to announce punctuation or spaces Fixes an issue that prevented MDM servers from installing Custom B2B apps All of these fixes are for minor edge cases that affect only small fractions of the iOS userbase—major development on iOS 9 stopped with iOS 9.3 , at which point Apple presumably shifted its f

There’s a hidden Instagram ‘Other’ inbox, too

Image
By now, we’re all decently familiar with Facebook and Messenger’s “Other” inbox – private messages that are filtered out based on spam detection and whether you’re friends with the sender. Facebook’s other social network property, Instagram, also has a direct message inbox. While it may be arguably less-used, you may be surprised to know the “Other” inbox system is present here as well. Here’s how to find it. First, go to your Instagram feed. Say hi to the new black and white UI if you recently updated the app.  Look to the upper right corner and hit the inbox icon. Don’t let the lack of unread numbers fool you – if you have messages in your filtered inbox, or “message requests” as IG calls them, you’ll see a blue bar at the very top. Instagram Since Instagram accounts can be privatized, you may even get picture messages you can’t see unless you follow this person. Annoying, but at least you can quickly avoid and delete the bot accounts. It seems Facebook intentionally makes
